GAME OF FAVOURITES

SELSTON 3 TEVERSAL 1
FA VASE ROUND 1Q @ THE PARISH
1 SEPT 2019 --- 3PM
SELSTON OPENER FROM KENAN LAYTON
One of the great entertainer Bruce Forsyth's much used and more recent game show catchphrases 'you're my favourite' was much banded around to all contestants, but I would apply his thoughts here today to this FA Vase encounter.  As a purely neutral hopper both Selston and Teversal remain well up at the top of my list purely on the small village clubs running and welcoming of fans they are a pleasure to visit.  Both clubs survive with the fantastic work of volunteers and officials and of course this season Selston newly promoted to step 5 continue their Corinthian terms of engagement!
ALL IS LOOKING COSY AT THE PARISH GROUNDS
Sunday football at the Parish would prove a delight with a cracking Vase game alongside four superbly struck goals to keep the large crowd entertained and it was only later on that the step 5 new boys pulled away from a valiant effort by visitors Teversal.
There would be a direct lift to the fixture today so it was cross border into Nottinghamshire and with both sides straddling the Derbyshire line in their own rights it was a fellow county cup tie that was to be served up for Sunday lunch.
TEVERSAL WIN THE EARLY AERIAL BATTLE
The ground had just been handed over that morning to the football club from the villages cricket team and they would return after playing a selection of 'home' games at South Normanton.  A warm welcome from the club officials at Selston was once again on show from the ladies on the car park to the snack bar and along to Adam for the team sheets its a club that comes highly recommended to any perspective visitors.  You wont get a big developed ground but you will get a club with lots of heart, battle and a warm greeting.  The cricket side floodlights are of course yet to be reinstated and much of the rest of the two sided remains as per previously described.  A small stand of both seats and covered standing alongside concrete hard standing with behind the entry goal a high viewing concrete terrace, its all very narrow but ultimately down the side you might as well be on the pitch you are that close to the action.  With the cricket pitch, pavilion and outfield on the near side by your entry its not an enclosed ground but that closeness on the two sides really does create an atmosphere.
SELSTON LOOKING TO DEVELOP DOWN THE RIGHT
Pre match it was good to acknowledge officials from both clubs and have a brief catch up with Selston assistant manager Richard Smith, as ever a pleasure thank you all.
A blistering start set both sides intentions to the fore and to use another Brucie catchphrase ' you don't get anything for a pair...........'  there were two early cautions.  Inside the first minute Aaron Pride was cautioned for the visitors for a sharp tackle and then more or less straight away the Selston bench received a caution for it looked like manager Craig Weston.
ULTIMATELY CRAIG WESTON WOULD BE THE HAPPIER OF THE TWO MANAGERS
The marker was set down for a cracking first half with Parker seeing his close range effort cleared off the line before Selston took the lead.  A free kick awarded by referee Buck 25 yards out on the inside right and kicking down the slope saw Kenan Layton line it up, approach and as the ball floated over the wall it curled into the top right hand corner giving Rio Alberry no chance in the Tevie goal.
The second half saw Teversal gain the upper hand and it was no surprise just short of the hour mark when they equalised with a screamer form Philip Griffiths who struck his short perfectly from 25 yards to beat Simon Baldwin in the home goal.
SEAN GREGORY SCORER OF THE THIRD SELSTON GOAL
As this game threatened to go away from the home side Baldwin looked beaten by another superb effort this time from Jonny Watkin but somehow he extended further in mid air to push the ball out for a corner.
Two goals in five minutes saw Selston take their half chances to secure the next round tie on 73 minutes Elliot Jones fired across Alberry into the far corner and then the game was put beyond doubt when captain Sean Gregory fired home with the outside of his boot to further add to the quality finishes contained in this encounter.
PENSIVE TIIME FOR COOKY ON THE TEVERSAL BENCH
A highly entertaining cup tie with both sides not messing around just getting on with a good
old battle Selston progress but for Teversal there was enough in this performance to keep manager Lee Cook more than happy.
LOVING THE TEVIE KIT COMBINATION
Look forward to seeing both sides again this season and follow their progress in their respective leagues, nice to see you to see you nice.
